The New Attack Surface: When AI Agents Become Targets

AI Agents open up an entirely new attack surface. Threat taxonomy analysis and DNA's assessment methodology.

The explosion of AI agents in enterprises has created an entirely new attack surface layer - where traditional security methods are no longer sufficient. With 15+ years of offensive security experience, I see this as the biggest shift since cloud computing.

AI Agent Threat Taxonomy

  • Tool Abuse: Exploiting tools the agent is permitted to use to perform unintended actions
  • Memory Poisoning: Injecting false information into long-term memory, affecting future decisions
  • Skill Injection: Installing malicious skills through social engineering or supply chain attacks
  • Multi-turn Manipulation: Guiding the agent through multiple turns to gradually escalate privileges

Real Attack Scenarios

An AI agent with email read/send permissions can be exploited through indirect prompt injection. An attacker sends an email containing hidden instructions, causing the agent to automatically forward sensitive content externally.

OWASP Top 10 for LLM Applications

OWASP has released the Top 10 risks for LLM Applications: Prompt Injection, Insecure Output Handling, Training Data Poisoning, Model DoS, and Supply Chain Vulnerabilities. DNA uses this framework as a baseline for all AI security assessments.

DNA's AI Security Assessment Methodology

DNA developed an assessment methodology based on OWASP Top 10 for LLM, combined with real-world red teaming experience through 5 phases: Agent Profiling, Permission Analysis, Injection Testing, Tool Chain Exploitation, and Lateral Movement Assessment.

warning 85% of AI agent deployments assessed by DNA in Q1 2026 had at least 3 OWASP Top 10 for LLM vulnerabilities. Most common: Prompt Injection and Insecure Output Handling.

AI agents are not just ordinary software. They make decisions and act autonomously - a vulnerability can lead to automated attack chains without attacker intervention.
